The Prince Edward Island Writers’ Guild was founded in 1989 by a group of writers who saw the necessity to unify literary programmes such as writing workshops and readings, to create a formal intersection for discussion and action, and to speak periodically as one voice for the Island’s literary community. The PEIWG is a registered not-for-profit organization that operates with funds from membership dues and fund-raising endeavors with support from the Government of Prince Edward Island - all of whom we gratefully acknowledge for helping to make our work possible. Our program costs are low and membership and workshop fees affordable. Our members are at all stages in their writing careers.
What do we do?
Advocacy: We represent the interests of writers to a variety of agencies and government departments, and work on behalf of those interests.
Mentorship Program: Every second year, the PEIWG offers a mentorship program in which emerging writers are matched with published authors to work together over a 3-month period.
Workshops: The PEIWG offers workshops for modest fees to members and non-members alike. Members receive a reduced rate.
Writers in the Schools Program: Every year we arrange and subsidize author visits to the province’s public schools to inform and inspire children and teachers about the world of writing and publishing. Educators are encouraged to ask us about how to book a writer. This program is funded by PEIWG and the Government of PEI.
Island Literary Awards: For over 20 years, the ILAs have recognized the best in Island writing with cash awards for the best entries in short story, poetry, children’s literature, creative non-fiction categories from writers of all ages. Several of our award winners are now published authors.
